The Call of the Mountains

Magnificent views

The Call of the Mountains

During previous holidays to Albania we were mainly busy visiting family and having the occasional day at the beach in Vilepoja.
Despite terrifying stories including bears, wolves and snakes the distant mountains always seemed to invite me.  So, on my persistent request, we finally headed for the Albanian Alps (Bjeshkët e Nemuna). We took the 'highway' to Hani i hotit.  The road between Shkodër and Hani i hotit (border with Montenegro) is finally coming about .  There are still some unfinished parts and the road signs are virtually nonexistent, but driving during daytime is feasible.

Hairpin turns leading to Razëm
When we left the spectacular mountain paths between Kotor and Podgorica (Montenegro) and entered Albania at Hani i hotit a week before, we were genuinely annoyed.  Without any road light it was very hard to drive safely through drifting sand. Before driving into the mountains that particular day we needed to fill up with diesel. Along the highway were several gas stations but none seemed to have the appropriate gaspump for our new car. We nearly had to drive as far as Hani i hotit on an almost empty tank. There we found a hypermodern gas station. Well, without a sense for adventure and a love for the unexpected you don't need to visit Albania.     D'oh !

Natyral Razma Resort
I eventually saw the first proper road sign to our destination Razëm.  The car ride to Razëm is definitely worth doing.  If you are into looking at amazing panoramic views from hairpin turns, go there. I was expecting a desolate, picturesque mountain village, but I got a national park including operational playing-grounds and a proper restaurant (Natyral Razma Resort).  The car-park attendant told us that the restaurant was only accessible after reservation.
Really !
We decided to have a walk and enjoyed the fresh mountain air.  Real hiking was not on the agenda because of our three year old son, but it was worth the trip.  I will find that picturesque mountain village later during a real hiking tour including backpack.

Made me think of the U.S.

Wandering The Streets of Shkodër

The sheep farmers exhibit their vendibles very early in the morning

You can find the most tasty and juicy fruits and vegetables here

A shoe shop and a typical 'men only' café

Wandering The Streets of Shkodër

We returned from Albania on Saturday (3:00 a.m.) last week.  It was scorching hot there and I looked forward to the mild Belgian climate.  However, when I woke up in my own bed on Saturday morning (10:00 a.m.) I was under the impression that I had never left Albania.  So last weekend I was panting and puffing again, hardly being able to move. Therefore I needed some more time to recuperate from this holiday and the long drive home.

I took these pictures in the city of Shkodër beginning last week.  Shkodër is situated in the north of Albania at the foot of the Albanian alps.  What struck me the most while visiting the city a few years ago was the immense network of entrepreneurs.  The streets are chock full of independents shops and street vendors.  Albania is still plagued by very high unemployment rates.

Shops and more shops

The supply of goods is very diverse and groceries are very fresh and cheap.  You can even buy live fish, chickens and sheep on the sidewalks in the shopping streets. I saw a man driving through the hectic traffic his bike basket filled with a newly bought, tied up sheep just a few day ago.  The confused sheep's eyes are etched in my memory forever.  Fish looking at me interrogatively from overpopulated, plastic containers and chickens relaxing in the sun awaited their fate; not my usual day out shopping.

Hotel Europe in the background
If the busy traffic and the heat are getting to you, you can have a drink in the numerous bars, on condition that you are a man that is.  It is tradition that men meet each other in these venues, whereas the women have their coffee at home.  A woman, preferably accompanied by a man, can only visit a few coffee bars like the bar at Hotel Europe and coffee bar Primavera.  On that particular day I was by myself and went to Hotel Europe accompanied by a book.  I got good service, the interior was luxurious and the airco worked impeccable.  I even saw more women sitting together on the outside terrace of Hotel Europe.
To be continued.

Going Back

Going Back

Tomorrow we return to my man's homeland, just for a little while.  I will definitely return with a lot of new stories. Albania is an exciting place, full of surprises.  The Albanian scenery has an amazing, pure beauty and the people possess a disarming simplicity.  It always feels a little like going back to my own native village.

In anticipation, I post the song 'Volver' (Going Back) sung by Estrella Morente.  Pure poetry. I heard it for the first time in the homonymous movie of Pedro Almodovar.  Volver, by the way, is a wonderful, colorful movie.

See you in two weeks.

Volver - sung by Estrella Morente

I imagine the flickering
of the lights that in the distance
will be marking my return.
They're the same that lit
with their pale reflections
deep hours of pain.
And even though I didn't want to come back,
you always return to your first love.
The quiet street where the echo said,
yours is her life, yours is her love,
under the mocking gaze of the stars
that, with indifference, see me return today.

To return
with withered face,
the snows of time
has whitened my temples.
To feel ... that life is a sigh
that twenty years is nothing,
that the feverish look,
wandering in the shadows,
looks for you and names you.
To live ...
with the soul clinging
to a sweet memory
that I cry for once more.

I am afraid of the encounter
with the past that returns
to comfort my life.
I am afraid of the nights
that, filled with memories,
shackle my dreams.

But the traveler that flees
sooner or later stops his walking.
And though forgetfulness,
which destroys us all,
has killed my old illusion,
I keep concealed a humble hope
that is my heart's whole fortune.
To live ...
with the soul clinging
to a sweet memory
that I cry for once more.

Midnight in Paris

zien.

Inhoud

My favorite spot in Paris : Montmartre

Midnight in Paris

If you are into the artistic, swinging twenties, you definitely have to watch Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen.

Plot

A successful Hollywood scriptwriter Gil Pender (Owen Wilson) is spending his holidays in Paris together with his girlfriend and her family.  He dreams about moving to Paris and writing literary novels.  He has been writing a novel wherein the protagonist works in a 'nostalgia shop', but he gets no support from the people close to him.  Hounded by a feeling of insecurity he refuses to let anyone read his novel.

One night he walks back to his hotel and gets lost.  When the clock strikes midnight, a vintage car pulls up at the side of the road and the partying passengers invite him to get in.  He ends up at a party where he meets Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald and where Cole Porter himself plays 'Let's Fall in Love' on the piano.

He immediately feels at home with his personal heros.  Each night he returns to the same spot and each night at twelve PM sharp the car appears again.  This way he meets a feisty Ernest Hemingway, a extrovert Gertrude Stein, a proud Pablo Picasso, a surreal Salvador Dali, a wavering Bunuel and an avant-garde Man Ray.

One night he also gets acquainted with Adriana, Picasso's beautiful mistress, and falls in love.  When he finally decides to stay with her, they wind up in the belle epoque.  Adriana feels more at home amongst Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gaugin and Edgar Degas.  She decides to stay.

Disheartened but enriched by all these experiences he finds his way back home and takes a drastic decision.

Thoughts

April in Paris on the steps in front of the Sacré-Coeur : exhilarating
The movie sings the praises of Paris.  The most gorgeous spots in Paris are beautifully pictured.  The situations and the dialogs are peppered with the usual, funny Woody Allen wit.  Clive Owen brings a whole new version of the typical, nervous Woody Allen main character.

There are some similarities with Manhattan, next to Husbands and Wives my favorite Woody Allen movie. The opening of the movie is as impressive and the main character has a corresponding identity crisis.  The movie is definitely amusing and filled with interesting thoughts on the feeling of nostalgia.  This is definitely a must-see for the incurable nostalgist.

Recipe for Life

Mijn stapel strandboeken ligt al klaar.  Mijn ongeduldige natuur dwong mij alvast eentje te lezen.  Ik koos 'Recipe for Life' van Nicky Pellegrino.

Your time is limited so don't waste it living someone else's life.'

My pile of beach books is ready.  However, my impatient nature forced me to read one already.  I chose 'Recipe for Life' by Nicky Pellegrino.

In the book the life of a girl named Alice gets turned upside down by some shocking experience.  She quits college and starts working in a restaurant.  Exhausted and upset she spends the summer together with her friend Leila in Villa Rosa, a gorgeous house built on a mountainside near the picturesque, Italian coast.  This summer changes the girls lives forever.  They will often recall these times.  It is in Villa Rosa where they will finally find themselves and each other again.

The writer describes the pleasures of home cooking, the challenges in professional cooking and the rewarding work of gardening colorfully.  I immediately started preparing my mediterranean cucumber salad, a recipe which I brought with me from Albania.  Moreover she pictures the beautiful surroundings and its warmhearted inhabitants in a loving way.  She modeled the fictitious village after Maratea in Basalicata.

In the beginning of the book she cites Steve Jobs : 'Your time is limited so don't waste it living someone else's life.'  This quote is actually the theme of the book.  This is something I totally agree with and reading this book was a lot of fun.

My Recipe for Life

300 grams of yoghurt
half a cucumber
two pinches of salt
three bulbs of garlic

Peel and grate the cucumber.  Add the salt and crushed garlic.  Mix carefully with the yoghurt.  Serve cold.

It is probably time to let the writer talk for herself now.

I Am Sentimental

Genuine puppy love. They will be together again soon.

Io che amo solo te - Sergio Endrigo

I, Who Love Only You (English translation of 'Io che amo solo te)

There are people who have had a thousands things
Everything good, everything bad in the world
And I have had only you
And I won't lose you
I won't let you go
To look for new adventures

There are people who love a thousands things
And are lost on the streets of the world
I, who love only you
I will stop myself
I will give you this
What remains of my youth

I have had only you
I won't lose you
I won't let you go
To look for new illusions

Come rain or shine, I just had to watch the movie Shadows in the Sun again yesterday.  I couldn't resist the beautiful colors, the gorgeous scenery, the funny dialogs and the romantic end scene in a poetic poppy field.  I forgot to mention the moving music in this scene.  It gets to me every time.
I mean 'Io che amo solo te' a romantic, Italian love song from the sixties sung by Sergio Endrigo.  Doesn't this song say it all ?  Yes, I admit it : 'I am sentimental.' *

Into the Sun

Over twee weken vertrekken we richting Albanië.

Summer has finally arrived in drizzly Belgium.  The sun has been shining for a few days now and the streets are getting some southern allure : women wearing dark shades and waving dresses striding the pavements, cars with shrieking tires driving by, children occupying the playgrounds and frisky couples walking hand in hand.

I really long for the holidays now.  In two weeks we are off to Albania.  After a 2000 kilometer car drive I will be sitting on my favorite terrace at last.  The numerous, playing children will bring the necessary hustle, the heat will be unbearable from time to time, especially for a northern soul, but the evenings are always a delight.

Whenever I miss the southern sun too much, I tend to watch the romantic comedy 'Shadows in the Sun'.  The movie always lifts my spirits.  In the movie a writer named Weldon Parish has lost all joy of life after the death of his wife.  He hasn't written anything for twenty years.  Jeremy, who works for a London publisher, is sent to Italy to change all this.  After the necessary misunderstandings there grows an intense friendship between the men and both their lives are changed for the better.

I bought the movie for a bargain.  At the time I thought : 'A movie set in Toscany and, moreover, with Harvey Keitel ? This cannot be disappointing. I got more than I bargained for.
