zien.

My favorite spot in Paris : Montmartre

Een succesvolle Hollywood scriptschrijver Gil Pender (Owen Wilson) is samen met zijn vriendin en haar rijke familie op vakantie in Parijs.  Hij droomt ervan daar te leven en literaire werken te schrijven.  Hij is op dat moment bezig met een boek waarin het hoofdpersonage in een 'nostalgia shop' werkt, maar hij krijgt geen enkele steun van de mensen rondom hem. Geplaagd door een gevoel van onzekerheid  weigert hij zijn boek door iemand te laten lezen.

Op een avond wandelt hij alleen naar zijn hotel en verdwaalt.  Wanneer de klok middernacht slaat, komt een oude auto voorbijrijden en de feestvierende inzittenden nodigen hem uit om in te stappen.  Hij komt terecht op een feest waar hij Zelda en Scott Fitzgerald ontmoet en Cole Porter achter de piano 'Let's Fall in Love' brengt.

Hij voelt zich onmiddellijk thuis bij zijn persoonlijke helden.  Elke avond gaat hij naar dezelfde plaats en om klokslag twaalf uur verschijnt de auto weer.  Zo ontmoet hij een lichtgeraakte Ernest Hemingway, een extraverte Gertrude Stein, een trotse Pablo Picasso, een surreële Salvador Dali, een weifelende Luis Bunuel en een avant-gardistische Man Ray.  

Op een avond maakt hij ook kennis met Adriana, de mooie minnares van Picasso, en wordt verliefd.  Wanneer hij uiteindelijk beslist om bij haar te blijven, belanden ze die avond samen in de belle époque.  Adriana voelt zich veel meer thuis tussen Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gaugin en Edgar Degas.  Zij beslist te blijven.

Teneergeslagen, maar verrijkt door de ervaringen vindt hij zijn weg terug naar huis en neemt een drastische beslissing.

Gedachten

De film is een lofzang voor Parijs.  De mooiste plekjes van Parijs worden met liefde in beeld gebracht. De situaties en de dialogen staan bol van de gewoonlijke, geslaagde Woody Allen humor.  Owen Wilson geeft een heel eigen interpretatie aan het typische, nerveuze Woody Allen hoofdpersonage. 

De film heeft enkele overeenkomsten met Manhatten, naast Husbands and Wives mijn favoriete film van Woody Allen. De opening van de film is even indrukwekkend en het hoofdpersonage heeft een gelijkaardige identiteitscrisis.  De film is zeker amusant en is doorspekt van interessante bedenkingen over het gevoel van nostalgie.  Midnight in Paris is voor een ongeneeslijke nostalgist een niet te missen film.

Midnight in Paris

If you are into the artistic, swinging twenties, you definitely have to watch Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen.

Plot

A successful Hollywood scriptwriter Gil Pender (Owen Wilson) is spending his holidays in Paris together with his girlfriend and her family.  He dreams about moving to Paris and writing literary novels.  He has been writing a novel wherein the protagonist works in a 'nostalgia shop', but he gets no support from the people close to him.  Hounded by a feeling of insecurity he refuses to let anyone read his novel.

One night he walks back to his hotel and gets lost.  When the clock strikes midnight, a vintage car pulls up at the side of the road and the partying passengers invite him to get in.  He ends up at a party where he meets Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald and where Cole Porter himself plays 'Let's Fall in Love' on the piano.

He immediately feels at home with his personal heros.  Each night he returns to the same spot and each night at twelve PM sharp the car appears again.  This way he meets a feisty Ernest Hemingway, a extrovert Gertrude Stein, a proud Pablo Picasso, a surreal Salvador Dali, a wavering Bunuel and an avant-garde Man Ray.

One night he also gets acquainted with Adriana, Picasso's beautiful mistress, and falls in love.  When he finally decides to stay with her, they wind up in the belle epoque.  Adriana feels more at home amongst Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gaugin and Edgar Degas.  She decides to stay.

Disheartened but enriched by all these experiences he finds his way back home and takes a drastic decision.

April in Paris on the steps in front of the Sacré-Coeur : exhilarating

The movie sings the praises of Paris.  The most gorgeous spots in Paris are beautifully pictured.  The situations and the dialogs are peppered with the usual, funny Woody Allen wit.  Clive Owen brings a whole new version of the typical, nervous Woody Allen main character.

There are some similarities with Manhattan, next to Husbands and Wives my favorite Woody Allen movie. The opening of the movie is as impressive and the main character has a corresponding identity crisis.  The movie is definitely amusing and filled with interesting thoughts on the feeling of nostalgia.  This is definitely a must-see for the incurable nostalgist.
